Newport’s First All Ireland Medal
A special function will be held at Ahern’s Lounge, Bunkey on this Friday night, December 20th to mark the centenary of the winning of the first All Ireland medal by a Newport representative. That honour fell to Martin Ahern who was a member of the Tipperary team which won the All Ireland Junior Hurling Championship of 1924. In that same year, Martin was also a member of the Newport team which brought the first club championship to the parish with the winning of the North Tipp Junior Hurling Championship.
