Junior Hurling
With a much-changed team from their previous outing, Newport recorded a 4-point victory over Portroe in the North Junior ‘B’ Hurling Championship at Lacken Park on Saturday evening. Scores were even for the first twenty minutes, but a purple patch for Newport saw them build up a 6-point interval lead. They stretched this to 10 points within 10 minutes of the resumption. However, Port upped their game and a goal as the game entered the closing stages reduced the deficit to 3 points, leading to a nervy ending. A late free sealed the issue for Newport, leaving the final score at 0-21 to 1-14. David Whelton was outstanding all through, while Emmet Floyd scored 0-5 on his return to the fold and Stephen Coffey accounted for 0-10 (7f).
