Junior ‘B’ Hurling
Silvermines emulated their Premier Intermediate Hurlers when they also overcame Newport in the first round of the Junior ‘B’ Hurling Championship. The sides were evenly matched for most of the first half, but a ‘Mines goal in the 25th minute helped them to a 1-9 to 0-8 interval lead. They continued to keep their noses in front in the second period, but a Newport goal, finished by James Moloney, two minutes into added time left the margin at two points, with the final score Silvermines 1-18 Newport 1-16. Newport fielded a young team, with five of last year’s Under 17s on board, although evergreens Mike Flannery and Andrew Hickey helped to raise the average age of the team considerably. Moloney accounted for 1-3, while Stephen Coffey pointed six frees. Hickey, Keith Hogan and John Lee were best in defence. They play Knockshegowna in Round 2 of the championship this Saturday evening in Lacken Park @ 7:30PM
